or drawing from life, I mainly draw people and or things when I'm in cafes or on journeys. I really like the work of Olivier Kugler who is a reportage illustrator- he basically travels all over the world 'experiencing the country' and making drawings from what he comes across and gets payed for it, I can't think of a better job! Will do a post of some of his work soon.
I was on a bus the other day and drawing this lady (on the right) the man sitting next to me started laughing, so I asked him 'What!?' he just kept on laughing, which made me laugh, he kept on laughing, untill the lady moved, then I said 'Why were you laughing!?' he just kept laughing and then said 'Why were you drawing her...Draw me!' so i did (on the left)

Raven Smith is a London based photographer his work is a form of performance. Have a look here [http://ravensmithphotography.blogspot.com/2009/09/untitled.html] for more photos and information
Ami Sioux [http://www.amisioux.com/] Photographer and Artist. I think this idea is amazing, basically she asked 50 people she knew and didn't know to sketch a map of a place in Paris that was important to them, she then went to that place and photographed what she saw. She then turned these images into a book.
On the theme of French films and directors, another genious is Jean-Luc Godard. I first came across him last year as part of my course we had a film season, in which they played this film 'Piorrot le fou' I fell in love with Anna Karina and Jean-Paul Belmondo, and the surrealness of this film, definitely go and watch it.
