what is a map?

I really like maps, and the different ways information can be represented.

Reportage Illustration

or drawing from life, I mainly draw people and or things when I'm in cafes or on journeys. I really like the work of Olivier Kugler who is a reportage illustrator- he basically travels all over the world 'experiencing the country' and making drawings from what he comes across and gets payed for it, I can't think of a better job! Will do a post of some of his work soon.

bus drawing

I was on a bus the other day and drawing this lady (on the right) the man sitting next to me started laughing, so I asked him 'What!?' he just kept on laughing, which made me laugh, he kept on laughing, untill the lady moved, then I said 'Why were you laughing!?' he just kept laughing and then said 'Why were you drawing her...Draw me!' so i did (on the left)

Welcome Collection

I went to a really interesting exhibition at the Welcome collection the other
day ( about medicine and it had lots of strange/grotesque bodies and weird diseases, was really good sources for drawing.

Lorene Carpentier

I've just come across two excellent photographers, the first is Lorene Carpentier [] french photographer, can't find too much about her, but check out her pictures, poems, grainy shots, very nice..

Raven Smith Photography

Raven Smith is a London based photographer his work is a form of performance. Have a look here [] for more photos and information

Anna Karina

Ami Sioux [] Photographer and Artist. I think this idea is amazing, basically she asked 50 people she knew and didn't know to sketch a map of a place in Paris that was important to them, she then went to that place and photographed what she saw. She then turned these images into a book.

Jean-Luc Godard

On the theme of French films and directors, another genious is Jean-Luc Godard. I first came across him last year as part of my course we had a film season, in which they played this film 'Piorrot le fou' I fell in love with Anna Karina and Jean-Paul Belmondo, and the surrealness of this film, definitely go and watch it.

I just watched Amelie again and had forgotten how much I loved it.
I think Audrey Tautau is amazing, I really want to see her in 'Coco Chanel'

south bank

Stumbled across the Thames Festival on South bank the other day, so these are a couple of photographs from that

These drawings by Marcel Dzama were a huge influence on my last project (top photo, again bad quality picture) which was based on the relationship, similarities and differences between humans and animals.
